The only way one can get to the settlement at the foot of the hills is to virtually slide down the hill. It is only recently that the hill has reluctantly yielded a narrow footpath.
Since no vehicle can make it down the hill, the journey is always on foot. After climbing down the steep hill, one has to cross a stream to get to the settlement. When it rains, the stream is impassable. This is how Maya, caregiver in Swaziland travels almost everyday to visit her sick patients, who are suffering from HIV related illnesses. Whether it rains and is very cold or when the sun is shinning at its best, Maya has to make her rounds before darkness falls. She must see her patients. They are relying on her services. more »
According to UNAIDS statistics, an estimated 24.5 Million adults and children were living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa at the end of 2005. During that year, an estimated two million people died from AIDS. The epidemic has left behind about 12 million orphans under the age of 15 living in sub-Saharan Africa.
